Although recommended, liability insurance for Farmers Market Vendors is not mandatory in Alberta.
If desired, Exhibitor Event Liability Insurance can be purchased through PAL https://www.palcanada.com or Premier https://premiergroup.ca. Members of the Alberta Farmers Market Association can access a group policy. They do have to be Chamber members ($75 per year) and the insurance cost is about $150 per year for a $5 million liability policy.
Alternatively, you may be able to have a rider put on an existing policy to cover this sort of “home/farm” sales. You would have to consult with your current provider directly to see if that could work for you.

For craft vendors, liability insurance, including coverage for your property as well as for others’ property (ie. your tent blows over and smashes into your next-door vendor), is recommended. Food vendors also inherently have a higher risk, so we recommend a policy that also covers food-related illnesses and recalls. For example, labels missing information, quality concerns, etc. have all bubbled up with vendors in the past. In Alberta, a food vendor ended up with an undeclared allergen in a spice mix they were purchasing from out of the country. They ended up having to do recalls, which isn’t cheap.
The type and level of coverage needed depends on the products and processes of each individual Vendor and should be discussed with and decided upon between you and your insurance provider.
